Firefighters Douse Brush Blaze Behind TJ Maxx Near Hwy. 101

The area appears to have been occupied by campers based upon evidence at the scene, fire officials said.

Firefighters battled a vegetation fire behind TJ Maxx and between the railroad tracks and the frontage road in San Rafael on Wednesday evening, according to fire officials.

At about 6:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire burning in thick vegetation to the rear of a building located at 600 Francisco Boulevard West between two commercial buildings and the railroad tracks, according to fire officials.

The fire was contained to about a quarter of an acre and created a large amount of smoke downtown.

Based on evidence at the scene of the fire, the area may have been occupied by campers, fire officials said.

According to fire officials, the City of San Rafael has been working with the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit to clear encampments in the area.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged during the fire, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. San Rafael fire officials are reminding the public that fireworks are illegal in Marin.

The Marin County Fair will host a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. for today's Independence Day celebration and each night through Sunday.
