Fire Damages Bay Area Boatworks

May have been set deliberately.

Evidence suggests that the fire that damaged Bay Area Boatworks Tuesday morning was set deliberately, San Rafael Fire Chief Christopher Gray said this afternoon.

Gray said the San Rafael Police Department has joined the investigation of the blaze that firefighters doused at 25 Third St. this morning.

The San Rafael Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at 5:52 a.m. at the boat repair business.

The structure was heavily  involved in fire with smoke showing as firefighters arrived on scene under the command of Battalion Chief Jeff Rowan.

About 20 firefighters responded and contained the fire within 20 minutes. They were able to prevent it from spreading to an area where flammable materials were stored.

The fire caused about $50,000 in structural damage and $10,000 in damage to the single-story building's contents, Rowan said. Rowan said there's no evidence of a break-in and no one was injured.
