Fire Chief Says Three Fires 'Suspicious in Nature'

Fire Chief Chris Gray said the cause of three fires near the old Borders store was suspicious.

San Rafael firefighters contained three separate vegetation fires near 600 Francisco West Sunday night, according to Fire Chief Chris Gray.

At approximately 9:20 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of flames near the railroad tracks behind the old Borders stores and R.A.B. Motors, Inc. They were able to extinguish the fires, and no one was injured, Gray said.

“The location of these fires was very close to two that burned several weeks ago,” he said.

 The San Rafael Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fires, which Gray says is “suspicious in nature.”

In the past several months, there has been  rash of fires in the area. On June 13, 38-year-old Hope Windom near the on Mission Street that scorched nearly an acre.

On May 23, firefighters near homeless encampments at 675 Anderson Dr.

Gray also urged residents to be aware of the vegetation around their homes that could be a fire hazard.

“When the dry vegetation is combined with higher temperatures, lower humidity and wind...it creates a serious fire threat,” he said.
