Anyone celebrating the end of summer with alcohol should make sure they'll have a designated driver when traveling home.
From Aug. 17 to Sept. 3, Marin law enforcement will be conducting DUI and driver’s license checkpoints and local roving DUI patrols as part of a statewide effort to crack down on impaired driving on the Labor Day weekend.
A series of roving patrols specifically on the look out for drunk and impaired drivers will operate throughout the county on various evenings from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
“Research has shown that high-visibility enforcement like the 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign reduces alcohol-impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent," Sgt. Christopher Coale said in a release. "By joining this statewide wide effort, we will make Marin’s roadways safer for everyone throughout the Labor Day period.”
Here is the list of planned checkpoints:
- Friday, Aug. 17 in San Rafael, westbound on Manuel T. Freitas Parkway at Las Gallinas Avenue beginning at 6:00 p.m. The checkpoint may relocate later in the evening to northbound Irwin Street at Fifth Avenue. This checkpoint is funded by a mini grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.
- Friday, Aug. 24 in Mill Valley, but the time and location is still to be determined.
- Friday, Aug. 31 in San Anselmo, the time and location is still to be determined.
In 2010 alone, 791 people died in California in crashes in which a driver or motorcycle rider was at or above the legal limit. The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes was the 21-to-24 age group.
