Officer will contact drivers through the checkpoint and search for signs of alcohol and drug impairment as well as proper licensing, according to San Rafael Police officials.

There were two DUI checkpoints held near San Rafael in July.

During the Fourth of July weekend, officers with various agencies in Marin conducted roving DUI patrols and a DUI checkpoint was held in San Anselmo on Red Hill Avenue.

Between Wednesday, July 3 and Sunday, July 7, the California Highway Patrol arrested 11 people on suspicion of DUI, including five Marin residents and one 17-year-old from San Rafael.

The San Rafael Police also conducted a court sting on Monday, July 8, and busted two suspected DUI drivers for driving away from Marin County Court even though they had a suspended drivers license.

The second DUI and drivers license checkpoint was held on July 19 in San Rafael.

Civil liberties advocates have also argued that police checkpoints violate the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable search and seizure.

Checkpoints are illegal in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and nine other states.

Remember, if you see a drunk driver, call 911.
