DUI Checkpoint Nabs Two

'Avoid the Marin 13' crackdown continues through Jan. 2.

The start of a Marin County's "Avoid the Marin 13" winter holiday safe driving campaign began Friday night with a DUI checkpoint in San Rafael.

The checkpoint ran from 6 p.m. Friday night to midnight this morning at the intersection of Manuel T. Freitas Parkway and Las Gallinas Avenue, police said.

During the operation, 1,440 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Police administered 32 field sobriety tests, which resulted in two DUI arrests, police said.

The two drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, not alcohol, police clarified. One driver was believed to be under the influence of a muscle relaxant and the other on Oxycodone, a prescription pain reliever.

Seven drivers with suspended licenses were also arrested. Twelve other drivers were cited and released for being unlicensed. One person was arrested on suspicion of an outstanding warrant, according to police.
