Detectives Arrest Known Gang Member on Suspicion of Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Using surveillance tapes of the incident, detectives identified a man who pulled a gun on a security guard at Mi Pueblo Supermarket.

San Rafael police officers arrested a known gang member after a security guard at the Mi Pueblo Supermarket was assaulted with a gun at 8:46 p.m. on April 14, according to Lt. Dan Fink.

The security guard at Mi Pueblo, located at 330 Bellam Blvd., told the officers that a man pulled a semi-automatic handgun on him after he caught the man and his two companions trying to take soda without paying for it. The man told the security guard that he was going to “put a bullet in him,” Fink said.

The suspects left the scene before officers arrived.

After reviewing surveillance video from the incident, detectives identified Walfre Jose Rios, 18, as the man who pulled the gun. Based on previous contacts, Rios is known to be a member of the Sureños, a street gang with affiliations to the Mexican Mafia. The gang has many members in the Canal neighborhood in San Rafael, according to the police.

Around 1 a.m., officers located Rios on the 400 block of Bahia Way and arrested him without incident. He was booked in Marin Count Jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, carrying a concealed weapon by a gang member and criminal threats. His bail is set at $75,000.

Police were able to identify another man in the incident, but the other two companions are currently not wanted for anything as far as the police know, according to Fink.
