Deputies Nab Burglary Suspects After Chase

One Santa Venetia neighbor found the suspect in her home after he fled the deputies.

Sheriff deputies arrested two suspects Monday morning after a manhunt that involved a residential burglary and a car crash.

Oakland resident Ruben Anthony Trevino, 43, was booked in on suspicion of residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. San Pablo resident Angel Phillips, 21, was booked in Marin County Jail on suspicion of burglary.

At approximately 9:37a.m. on Monday, deputies received reports that a Santa Venetia resident interrupted a burglary on the 100 block of Mark Twain Avenue.

“When confronted, the suspect assaulted the victim and ran from the residence on foot,” Sgt. Mark Hale said.

Trevino was seen leaving the area in his car, and deputies saw a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle traveling westbound in the area of North San Pedro Road and Golf Avenue, Hale said.

Hitting a dead end on Golf Avenue, Trevino turned to face the sheriff’s patrol car and drove into it before crashing into the embankment, according to Hale. No one was injured in the collision.

Trevino fled on foot and left Phillips in the car, where she was arrested.

With the help of the San Rafael and Novato police departments and the California Highway Patrol, a manhunt ensued for the next hour.  Venetia Valley Elementary was temporarily put on lockdown during this time, according to several parents who received email alerts.

A Santa Venetia neighbor told Patch that Trevino opened the back door of her home while she was there.  “I confronted him and he fled, jumping over a few backyard fences,” she said.

Around 11:24a.m. deputies found Trevino hiding inside a yard compost container in the backyard of a residence in the 100 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to Hale.

Trevino had an outstanding warrant for burglary in Alameda County as well as a federal warrant. His bail is set at $75,000 and Phillips is $50,000.
