Crime Trends: Reports Center on Downtown San Rafael, Canal

See our interactive map of crime reports in San Rafael from Oct. 30 to Nov. 13.

Criminal acitivity is concentrated in the downtown area and in the Canal neighborhood, primarily along the 101 corridor. Thefts, including vehicle thefts, are among the highest reported for the two-week span.

Hey, Nicole? Friggin' awesome.

Thanks guys! It's been a little bit of project. Thinking about doing something like this every two weeks, time permitting.

I think this is scary, actually. We live a mile from downtown. We need to clean up San Rafael!
David Edmondson November 20, 2012 at 06:27 AM
Was it really just a focus on downtown? It looks like crime is spread fairly evenly through the places where people are: Canal, Lincoln, as well as downtown. I may not be quite so up on my GIS skills, but Patch might have a professional development opportunity to get training on that. You can do some fantastic crime mapping, especially with Google Earth Pro. A heat map might better reveal problem blocks than tags, but as it stands, I maintain my compliment. Friggin' awesome.

I was thinking about making it a heat map, but the main issue is more figuring out how to transfer the data into a map that can be embedded on our page. Our CMS is limited that way.

I have used Crimereports.com ever since I noticed the link on the Novato PD website. I see that you are required to register and login now. It is interesting to focus on a single type of crime and see the pattern.

this bring reality home. Thanks you for this project. Let's see how we can al help to reduce these numbers over time. First step in dealing with a problem is acknowledging that you have one. Seems we have one (a crime problem). Thanks Nicole.

thanks for doing this. You can see exactly how crime is spreading up out of the Canal and into the streets that spring out from the main Canal exit streets! There has even been a recent gang shooting at 4th and Tamalpias. That entire area under the freeway overpasses and stretching outward is dangerous. Wondering when San Rafael citizens are going to ask the police and fund the police to clean up the area !

Embedding is a pain; I can't do Google Maps on Wordpress, so I usually just do a screenshot and link directly to the map. When I do a post on Patch I try to work the link into the text.
