County Coroner IDs Fatal Bike Crash Victim as 79-Year-Old San Rafael Man

Bicyclist David Hauer appears to have fallen into the path of the vehicle that struck him in Inverness Park, according to a preliminary report by the California Highway Patrol.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Coroner Division has identified the bicyclist killed in a crash with a vehicle in Inverness Park Friday afternoon as 79-year-old David Hauer of San Rafael.

The incident occurred in front of Perry's Deli at 12301 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Inverness Park, and Hauer was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Hauer apparently fell off his bike and into the path of the vehicle, according to a preliminary report by the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said the bicyclist and the vehicle were traveling east on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard around 12:30 p.m.

The vehicle started passing the bicyclist, and when the front of the vehicle was past the bicyclist, the bicyclist appears to have fallen in toward the vehicle and onto the ground, Barclay said.

The bicyclist was then run over by the vehicle's the rear wheels, according to the male driver's account of the fatal collision, Barclay said.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle driver heard a loud noise and stopped and has been extremely cooperative with the investigation, Barclay said.

Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is a two-lane, undivided road in the collision area, and it's unknown if there is a bike lane there, Barclay said.

Sir Francis Drake Boulevard was closed until 3:38 p.m.
