San Rafael Firefighters snuffed out three small brush fires in a roughly 12-hour window Tuesday and Wednesday, sure signs of this week’s record-breaking high temperatures.

Windy conditions earlier this week made the risk of wildfires especially high. Although the wind is expected to die down, high temperatures will continue through Thursday, when the high for San Rafael is expected to reach 91 degrees.

“The high heat though over the next two days is going to be severe,” wrote San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray in an e-mail to Patch. “With the conditions just right for fire, it doesn’t take much…everyone should be extra cautious.”

Firefighters extinguished a small vegetation fire off Kerner Blvd. on Tuesday night and two other small fires on Wednesday — one in the Point San Pedro Road median and another on Highway 101, Gray said.

“Common sources of problems are high winds, arcing wires, discarded smoking materials, use of spark producing equipment, outdoor cooking or burning, and of course the dreaded intentionally set fire,” Gray said.
