5-Year-Old Boy who Fell from 15-Foot San Rafael Rooftop Recovering from Injuries

A 5-year-old boy who fell from 15-foot garage roof in San Rafael is on the road to recovery.

The boy suffered head injuries in a Tuesday afternoon rooftop plunge at 1356 Lincoln Avenue.

“He’s doing well,” San Rafael Fire Battalion Chief Paul Crimmins said.

The boy remains at Oakland Children’s Hospital, where he was transported after initially being taken to Marin General Hospital. Initial reports that the boy was airlifted to Stanford Hospital were inaccurate, Crimmins said.

Crimmins said Oakland Children’s Hospital has one of the Bay Area’s best trauma units. He couldn’t confirm whether the boy was transferred to the East Bay by air or ground.

The boy reached the garage roof from a second-floor balcony where he’d been playing by climbing under the railing according a report in the Marin Independent Journal, citing a preliminary report of the incident.

The boy was conscious but could not communicate with police and firefighters who arrived on the scene, the report said.

The most recent update of the boy’s progress has firefighters in San Rafael breathing easier, Crimmins said.

“Pediatric calls always involve a little more anxiety and tension, especially with a high-level fall like it’s such a critical call,” Crimmins said. “We want things to go well and the outcome to be positive and there’s a lot of tension that goes with that.”
