Presentation about Drought and Water Conservation

Marin Municipal Water District General Manager Krishna Kumar will make a presentation to the City Council on Monday night at 7 p.m. about the current drought. He will discuss MMWD’s recent resolution requesting 25% voluntary water use reductions by all water users and how the community can help conserve water during this drought. Click here to learn about how you can conserve water.

I am pleased to report that the City is already taking several actions across all departments to reduce water usage including not washing fleet vehicles, eliminating irrigation and reducing landscape watering to the bare minimum, installing low-flow toilets and faucets when feasible, and reducing shower times. New FEMA Flood Maps

Also on Monday evening, Public Works and FEMA will present information about new FEMA flood insurance maps that identify flood hazards and assess flood risks. This is an important part of the National Flood Insurance Program, as it is the basis of regulations and flood insurance requirements. There has been considerable community interest in these new maps as they impact some homeowners insurance. Click here for the staff report.

Preparing for Sea-Level Rise in San Rafael

On Monday night, Community Development Director Paul Jensen will present a report on sea-level rise in San Rafael. The “white paper” was prompted as a “first step” to respond to the programs of the City-adopted Climate Change Action Plan. Click here for the sustainability page of the City web site and then choose your “Hot Link” for either the Paper or its Appendices.

Mid-Year Budget Review

Also at Monday’s City Council meeting, Finance Director Mark Moses will present the mid-year Fiscal 13/14 budget. The budget will be updated to reflect changes resulting from the passage of Measure E in November, actual revenue experience for the first half of the fiscal year, and implementation of the Capital Improvement Program. Fortunately, we have not incurred any significant unexpected expenses in the General Fund during the first half of the year, so we will continue to work within the budget that was authorized last June.
