Marin Ace Provides Helpful Lawn Care Tips for Local Homeowners

There are a few quick and easy tips that local homeowners can follow this fall to achieve a healthy yard in 2013. Marin Ace Hardware is happy to offer San Rafael homeowners their top fall lawn and garden tips, so their customers can quickly and easily turn their outdoor to-do lists into to-done lists.

“Fall is the perfect time of year to spend time outside getting your lawn and garden ready for spring before the winter weather arrives,” says Chris Valle, Manager of Marin Ace. “Lawn care is a very important part of your home’s overall maintenance and with a little time spent pruning, raking and seeding this fall, you can ensure that you’ll have the best looking lawn on the block by spring.”

“As the days get colder, we know many homeowners want to spend their time indoors.  However, it’s important your home’s outdoor area is maintained properly, so it looks its best next spring,” shared Jason Margolin, Nursery Manager at Marin Ace. “We have a wide variety of name brand lawn and garden products and a dedicated team of helpful associates to help homeowners get the job done quickly and easily.”

To ensure homeowners turn their fall lawn and garden to-lists into to-done lists, the Marin Ace team offers these quick and easy tips:

Trim Back Plants: With the exception of spring-flowering shrubs and trees, fall is the best time to prune plants around the yard. Before pruning, homeowners should stand 10 to 15 feet away from the shrub or tree to look at it in its entirety. From there, use pruning shears to cut away any broken or dead pieces and step back after every few cuts to avoid over-pruning. Use lopping shears or a pruning saw to remove larger branches. The general rule thumb is to remove no more than one-third of the plants growth and to avoid changing the overall shape of the plant.

Feed and Protect: Once trees and shrubs are pruned and the temperatures drops, it is important to make sure that they are well fed and protected for the winter season. A quick way to fertilize is by using Jobe’s® Fertilizer Spikes. They are inserted into the ground around the tree or shrub and slowly release fertilizer throughout the season. It’s an easy way to guarantee well fed plants until spring. Finally, tender shrubs that are affected by our frequent frosty San Rafael nights, such as citrus, fuchsia, and bougainvillea, will benefit from a plant cover to protect them from the cold winter weather.

Winterize the Lawn: Taking care of the lawn’s needs in the fall is key to a green, lush lawn by spring. First, homeowners must remove the thatch in the lawn. This can be done through traditional raking or a motorized lawn dethatcher, which will remove all of the dead grass and leaves that can clog the lawn and prevent new growth. The next step is to aerate the lawn. Aeration removes small plugs of the lawn to expose the soil and allows the lawn to breath by giving the roots more room to grow. Homeowners can do this manually for smaller lawns or rent a power aerator for larger lawns. Once the aerating is complete, a winterizing fertilizer such as Scotts® Winterizing Fertilizer or Milorganite® Fertilizer (all-natural) can be applied. The fertilizer will give the lawn the extra boost it needs so that it can bounce back quicker in the spring for a healthy, green lawn.

Clean Up Now. Be Prepared Later: Once the pruning and fertilizing is done, many homeowners think their lawn and garden to-do list is complete, but they often neglect one important thing – garden tool care. As important as it is to prepare the lawn and garden, it is equally as important to take care of the tools that get the job done. By applying a lightweight oil such as WD-40® and sanding with an ultra-fine sanding sponge, dull tools can be like-new and be in prime condition when they are brought back out for projects in the spring.
