Hang your Carbon Monoxide Detectors – it’s the law (and for your family’s health & safety)!

Does the place you call home contain a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, fireplace or an attached garage? The law now requires you must have a carbon monoxide (CO) detector as of January 1st, 2013, whether you live in an apartment, hotel or house. Homeowners have been required to install carbon monoxide detectors within the home since The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act, effective as of 2011. Now, owners of multi-family leased or rental dwellings, such as apartment buildings and hotels, must comply with the law as of 1/1/13.

The main sources of carbon monoxide are engine fumes (such as from cars or boats), fires burning with poor ventilation (such as gas heaters and indoor cooking fires), factories, and smoking tobacco.  You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes.  Hundreds of people die accidentally every year from CO poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances.  Even more die from CO produced by idling cars.  Fetuses, infants, elderly people, and people with anemia or with a history of heart or respiratory disease can be especially susceptible.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors are as easy to install as a smoke detector (and can even be found together in the same unit if you wish.) If you need to install a CO detector in your residence, determine ahead of time whether you want a battery-operated one to mount on the ceiling or wall, or if you want to plug in your CO Detector into an electrical outlet (these styles must have battery backup per California law). Marin Ace offers a variety of CO Detectors and smoke detectors, with our best-selling First Alert battery operated CO Detector, item 5137864, on sale for $16.99 throughout January 2013 – and even more savings for Ace Rewards members: $12.99 after a $4.00 Instant Savings rebate, regularly $19.99).

Make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors correctly installed in your home, not only to be following the law, but for your own safety and the health of those around you.
