Budget Planning Workshops Coming in Late March

The Marin County Board of Supervisors will host budget planning workshops March 24-26 to provide a preview of the County’s two-year budget and presentations from department heads of their upcoming work plans.

For the first time in five years, the County is not considering service reductions. Between 2008 and 2013, the County reduced more than $30 million in annual spending and cut its workforce by more than 200 positions, or 11 percent.

“The budget is now balanced because of past decisions to reduce spending and to pay down of retiree liabilities,” said County Administrator Matthew Hymel. “The improving economy will provide modest revenue increases, but it will only be enough to support existing services.”

To encourage longer-term planning, the County will be preparing its first two-year budget to the Supervisors. In June, the Board will be asked to formally adopt a 2014-15 budget and a budget plan for 2015-16.

The public hearings start at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24 and will continue at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 and 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 in the Board Chambers, located in Room 330 at the Marin County Civic Center at 3501 Civic Center Drive in San Rafael. The sessions will be webcast on the County’s website. Materials will be available online by March 21 at along with other information about the County.
