Pride Get The Win in Their Debut

SATURDAY MARCH 22 - SAN RAFAEL, CA

The answer to the trivia question: "who scored the first touchdown in Marin County Pride history?", the answer is Receiver Michael Verby. Quarterback Harry Taylor connected on a long pass to his former Terra Linda High School teammate to put the Pride on the board for the first time in their history to take an early 6-0 lead. Taylor would use great pocket presence to hit former Tam Grad Dana Mills for the second of the game to put the Pride on top 13-0 over the Scorpions in the 2nd quarter.

But the California Scorpions (Sacramento) would not lay down. Late in the 2nd quarter the Scorpions would take a tipped pass to the house to to make the score 13-8 at the half. By this time the Pride defense had put the clamps down on the Scorpions offense holding them to just two first downs in the first half.

Late in the third quarter with both teams struggling to move the ball it would be the Scorpions special teams to make a play with a blocked punt that gave them possesion in the red zone. The short field would lead to a touchdown to put the Scorpions in the lead 14-13 to start the final quarter. Then the Pride defense took over....

They would not allow another first down the rest of the night and led by their front four of Kenneth Hightiower, Charles Griffin, Josh Shelton, and Kyle Scott the defense would make the play of the night. With less than nine minutes to the play it was Defensive End Kyle Scott to make that play of the night as he would be pick up a bobbled shotgun snap and go all the way for the score. The Pride would fail on the 2 point conversion but maintain 19-14 lead. That's all they would need as the Pride defense would dominant the rest of the evening and put the ball back in the offenses hands.

The offense would finish off the night with their running game as former Novato High Running Back Josh Del Pino would seal the deal with several big runs allowing the offense to use the last five minutes of the clock to get the victory.

Coach Jackson stated "It was only fitting that our defense scored the winning touchdown. That group is phenomenal. Our Linebackers Kennedy, Salas, and Kings were excellent. And our rotation with about 7 to 8 defensive linemen put pressure on the quarterback all night. We are young on offense but we had some explosive plays. But our defense is as advertised. I could not be more proud of the way our guys competed tonight. And to do it in front of this crowd. Marin deserves this. We are so thankful to our fans and their support."

The Pride have an early season bye and have next week off but will jump right back into things to take on the NorCal Knights in San Leandro the following week. For all the scores, news, stats, and highlights of the Marin County Pride visit www.mcpridefootball.com
