Is this Summer or Winter?

Pondering the crazy "summer" weather.

Everyone,  it seems, is asking the same thing on the street: Is this summer or winter again?

Our weather has been rainy, and actually I liked the way it has watered my patio garden. I went to Home Depot last week and bought some chard seeds and a zucchini plant at Orchard Supply. I also had some corn seed so I planted that too! I can't imagine getting much crop here on my tiny patio, but I am enjoying the plants I can already see growing.

Oh, I have done some strange gardens in my day, one was planted in our old corral in the mountains, after we sold off our horses. Basically manure and some dirt over solid granite base. We cut off a small mountain top for our house pad. Well, my carrots came in an L shape, they grew down to the granite and then sideways!

Then when that was finished, I planted a big garden in the front yard. You see on decomposed granite, you take whatever will grow wherever it will grow. I had a fairly good garden, then we took in a family in their camp trailer in exchange for help with the garden. Well, the guy had this wonder compost to add from a barrel in their trailer. He dumped it into my nice garden one day, and it was full of weed seeds!!! Some of my corn had only six or eight kernels of corn on them, but when your poor, you don't mind. What a feast.  I do remember we had green beans, squash, corn (well sort of), tomatoes, chard and onions. We harvested what the jack rabbits didn't eat!! There were rattle snakes in the garden one day, too, and they seem to travel in pairs. So, we had lots of "company" on our five acres: rabbits, coyotes, snakes, tarantulas, and tons of lizards.

But I am hoping  we get some nicer weather, our apartment pool is ready to dive in. I hope we can enjoy it soon. In the mean while I will bundle up for my 7:15 a.m. shift on the street, and wear my warm coat again.

Let's see what it is like this coming week? Snow? The kids would love it!
