San Rafael Shopping Initiative Supports Local Schools

About 50 downtown merchants have pledged to donate a portion of their profits from sales during "Shop Local for Schools" to San Rafael schools.

A group that supports San Rafael’s public schools is urging locals to shop downtown for the next four days.

The HeadsUp San Rafael Public Education Foundation and the San Rafael Downtown Business Improvement District have partnered with about 50 downtown retailers and restaurants for a “Shop Local for Schools” initiative.

The event starts today and runs through Sunday.

About 50 downtown merchants have pledged to donate a portion of their profits from sales during this initiative, HeadsUp Executive Director Maika Llorens Gulati said in a prepared statement.

Last year’s event raised $5,000 for the HeadsUp fund, Gulati said.

"We are one community. We need to support each other," Gulati said.

"When you Shop Local, money stays in the community and benefits our schools. It's estimated that for every dollar you spend, twice as much will be reinvested in the community by a local store. And we all know that good schools enhance the quality of life for everyone."
