World Class Alterna-Jazz Musicians Ian Ethan, Motoshi Kosako, Michael Manring & Paul McCandless
This concert at Studio 55 will be an
evening of firsts not only for audience members but the musicians
themselves. It will be an exciting time for the musicians as it is the first time Motoshi Kosako will
have performed with Michael Manring and it's the first time Motoshi will have had the opportunity
to play with both Paul McCandless and Michael Manring at the same time!
Additionally
Ian Ethan will be featuring his main
instrument, the acoustic double-neck guitar, and some fretless guitar
and African kalimba. Performing live in one pass, with no
pre-recorded samples or loops Ian plays into the loopers on
the spot in real-time. Ian controls those loops with his feet to
turn parts on and off and create multi-layered arrangements on the fly.
Paul McCandless and Michael Manring will join him on some of these
special compositions.
This evening's co-mingling of instrumental
talent and skill deftly mixed with a large dollop of improvisation will
elevate both mind and spirit!
The Musicians:
Double-Neck Guitarist Ian Ethan began a
journey into truly uncharted territory when he picked up this
seldom-seen 18-string instrument in 2005, two years after
leaving the Berklee College of Music. While most who venture to play the
instrument are either baffled by or unaware of the possibilities that
it offers, for Ethan it is simply "the most effective
and intuitive means I've found to translate into sound the things I'm
hearing in my head."
Ian Ethan's strikingly-unconventional,
self-invented approach to the double-neck guitar is both magical to hear
and fascinating to watch. While his performances are visually
intriguing
to say the least, it is not showmanship but rather the sincere desire to
accurately communicate the harmonically rich, multi-layered music of
his composing that has impelled him every step of the way.
Motoshi Kosako is considered one of the most influential Jazz harpists in Japan. In 2002 and 2003, he recorded two classical harp albums, Celestial Harp I
and Celestial Harp II . In April 2008, he released his first Jazz Album, Naked Wonder. In 2010 he started an intimate collaboration with Paul McCandless and released the duo album
Place in the Heart.
Sacramento Magazine says "Kosako plays with
fluid, modern style that evokes Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea." His
groundbreaking style is also noted in Harp Column as "Motoshi Kosako,
a Japanese native whose introspective soloing was reminiscent of Keith
Jarrett." Motoshi was the principal harpist of Stockton Symphony
Orchestra and was the featured soloist for Mozart's
Flute & Harp Concerto in the 2009-2010 season.
Michael Manring, (bass), known for his innovative approach to
the bass and adventurous solo concerts, has appeared on approximately
200 recordings, and toured throughout
the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has received Grammy and Bammie
nominations, the Berklee School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award, two
Gold Records, and the Bassist of the Year award from
the readers of Bass Player magazine.
Paul McCandless is a Grammy Award Winner. He is a gifted
multi-instrumentalist and composer, specializing on the oboe, English
horn, bass clarinet, soprano and sopranino
saxophones and a collection of folk flutes reflecting his grounding in
both classical and jazz disciplines.

Quotes:
“Though
the big name acts like Stanley Jordan, Robben Ford (who received The
Guitar Player Certified Legend award at the event) and host and
performer Muriel Anderson were the big name draws of this ‘exclusive’
event, it was some of the lesser known names who were the most
interesting of the long showcase...Ian Ethan Case is a young
guitarist with a style that is both sonically and visually original and
unorthodox in all the best ways.”- Devon “Doc” Wendell, International
