 NAMI Marin Guest Speaker Meeting

"I'm Fine, There's Nothing Wrong with Me!"

Featuring  Alexandra Mathews, PhD
Does your loved one lack insight and awareness of their disorder? Nearly half of people with severe mental illness have anosognosia (unawareness of one's own mental illness).  To other people, this poor insight may look like denial, oppositionality, or stubbornness. However, recent research has demonstrated that there is a biochemical cause for this lack of insight. No amount of trying to reason will change this self-perception. Learn more about this under-recognized deficit and how to support your loved one’s progress despite it. Become a stronger advocate and more accepting  family/friend.

Speaker: Alexandra Matthews, PhD is a Cognitive-Behavioral psychologist in private practice in Mill Valley, and on the clinical faculty of the UCSF Department of Psychiatry.  She works with children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of mental illness.
