Sky Oaks Road Closing for Slide Repairs

The Marin Municipal Water District announced the main route to the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed will be closed for slide repair during the fall.

Sky Oaks Road, the main route to the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, will be closed for slide repair work this fall, the Marin Municipal Water District announced Tuesday.

Repairs will take approximately six weeks starting in mid-October and the road will be completely closed on some weekdays during the repairs. The road will remain open on weekends.

A significant slide in March undercut the paved road located two miles west of Fairfax.

The road will be closed to accommodate large, heavy equipment for hillside drilling. There will be delays throughout the construction period and traffic control will be in place at times.

Weather conditions also may affect the work schedule, district spokeswoman Libby Pischel said.

The slide repairs must be completed before heavy rains this winter that could cause more damage.

Since March, the water district has blocked off the outside edge of the road with temporary barricades and traffic has been limited to one way to maintain safety, Pischel said.

When the repairs are completed, the road will be in its pre-slide condition and the structural integrity of the road and hillside will prevent a slide from occurring at the same location again, Pischel said.

Hillside Drilling Inc. based in Richmond was awarded the contract for the $128,369 project.

A weekly update on the specific dates and times of the road closure will be posted every Friday on the district's website.
