Interactive Map Shows Marin Migration

A new interactive map from Forbes shows America's migration from 2005 to 2009.

A new interactive map from Forbes, based on IRS data, shows in graphic detail just how many people move into and out of Marin.

The map shows red counties where more people moved to from Marin than moved to Marin from. The blue counties show places that were net exporters of residents to Marin.

Sonoma is our biggest taker of people, with approximately 1,000 people with an average income of $33,200 moving to Marin from Sonoma and 1,531 people with an average income of $40,300 moving to Sonoma from Marin in 2009.

The data also backs up long-held assumptions about real estate in the county; once San Franciscans make enough money and want to get out out the city, they come to us. San Francisco sends us our most residents, with 1,934 people moving from the city to Marin, at an average income of $102,000 and 1,146 people moving from Marin to San Francisco with an average income of $55,300 in 2009.

Largely, the counties in the East and South Bay send us residents, while we send them on North to Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties.

There were also 26 people that moved from Minneapolis to Marin and 89 from Chicago with an average income of $278,700.

A look at the migration map of who is moving to San Francisco in the first place shows an even starker picture with the counties farther from the Bay, in the Central Valley and Los Angeles exporting people to the city by the Bay. San Francisco, in turns, sends them on to the surrounding suburban counties of the Bay -- north, east and south.
