“No on 32”/”Yes on 30” Education & Labor Rally

A labor and education rally next Thursday highlights Marin’s 2012 Election season as hundreds of Democrats gather to get out the vote to stop drastic cuts in funding for public schools and services and prevent SuperPACS from polluting California elections.

The November 18th rally, hosted by California Teachers Association,
North Bay Labor Council, California School Employees Association, and
The Marin Democratic Party, spotlights the collaboration between labor and education on two propositions: “Yes on 30,” the Schools & Local Public Safety Protection Act, and “No on 32,” referred to as  “Stop Special Interest Money Now Act.”   

Proposition 30 will prevent $6 million in cuts from California public schools while Proposition 32 contains exemptions for SuperPACS which allow ongoing support of public elections.

 “It’s mind numbing to try to comprehend how our local schools will continue to survive,” says Andy Hyman, a delegate to the August Democratic Convention and a Dixie Elementary School District Trustee,  “And it is even more difficult to begin to anticipate what additional tough funding decisions lie ahead for our district and many others across Marin County without the infusion of revenue from Proposition 30.”

 The event begins at 4 pm inside the Marin Democratic Party Headquartes at 1653 Second Street, San Rafael, with appearances by Assembly Member Michael Allen; Superintendent of Schools Mary Jane Burke ; Chairman of the Marin Democratic Party Paul Cohen; California Teachers Association Director Larry Allen;  North Bay Labor Council Executive Director Lisa Maldonado;  San Rafael City Council member Damon Connolly; and Gabriella Echevarria, Field Director of the California School Employees Association.

“We’re expecting this event to draw enormous support from parents and teachers throughout the community,” said Hyman. “These proposals are just too important not to ignore.”

A march down Second Street will be followed by phone banking inside the headquarters.
