Tuesday Tech Tip: Four Tips for Safer Internet Passwords

Tuesday Tech Tip: Four suggestions to help keep your internet experiences safe with better passwords.

So many of us rely on passwords for our on-line tools, whether for business or for fun. You might be surprised how easy it is for identify thieves to sneak into accounts.

The most common password is 'password', followed by '123456' (really).
Here are four suggestions to help keep your internet experiences safe.

1. Use several passwords – ideally one for each site, and definitely keep passwords for social media/fun accounts different from your passwords for business, credit cards, banking, etc.

2. Create and use passwords that are not easily identifiable: avoid complete words, avoid sequence of letters or numbers, avoid using your name, children or pets names, anything tied to your personal identity - much of this info can be found on the internet.

3. Change your passwords every 90 days.  Especially banking, business websites.

4. Safest experience is to use a Password Vault (service) that creates and stores complex passwords.

I have a 30-minute Podcast on this topic available on Episode 2 of the Your Technology Tutor program which you'll find in the iTunes Store.
