What Do You Wish Was Here?

After 65 years, Western Sport Shop at 902 Third St. recently closed it's doors. What do you wish fills its place?

Our city's commerical vacany rate is currently between 8 percent and 10 percent. San Rafael Patch is featuring each week a vacant or abandoned building or lot and asking readers: "What do you wish was here?"

The idea was inspired by Candy Chang from New Orleans, who in 2010 created "I wish this was" stickers and placed thousands around the city for residents to fill in the blanks. Stickers can be bought online here

After 65 years, at 902 Third St. recently closed it's doors. What do you wish fills its place?

About this column: There are plenty of empty and abandoned buildings in San Rafael. What do you wish was there instead?

I'd much rather see an apartment complex across the street first and a two-way cycletrack in place of the parking along Third. As for the building? It's a tough one. Maybe a frozen yogurt shop? Cupcakes? I'm really bad at retail planning. I say this order of things: 1) Cycle track on Third 2) Frozen yogurt shop at 902 Third 3) Site plan for PG&E's vacant lot

Really sad to see Western Sports go. Electric cycle shop. As batteries get better, electric bicycles and motorcycles will grow in popularity. Currently, most electric bicycles are a side item in stores or custom built in garages. Electric motorscooters (Vespa style) are getting more common. They could sell mobility scooters to our aging population too.
