Party Down in San Rafael this New Year's Eve

Lots of choices for fun!

Once again, Vin Antico Chef-owner Ed Vigil is pulling out all the stops on his New Year's Eve menu. He thrilled us with venison, duck breast and seafood-stuffed squid ink ravioli at Christmas, but his last a la carte menu of the year tops even that one, while including those choices.

Some features include California caviar paired with a smoked sturgeon mousse, blinis, and crème fraiche ($14); oven-roasted oysters topped with wild mushrooms and creamy leeks ($14); a bourride made with Dungeness crab, Manila clams, halibut, garlic, saffron rouille ($27), plus an Italian white truffle risotto with prosciutto, roasted root vegetables, poached egg and shaved truffles ($31) and Masami Ranch Kobe steak, olive oil poached Red Thumb potatoes, wild mushrooms, Speck, Cresta di Gallo ($26) The menu will be served from 5 to 11 p.m.

Chef David Haydon of Il Davide has designed a four-course prix fixe menu for $60 that will tickle your taste buds with wild sea bass on poached garlic with saffron; another compelling dish is roasted lamb with a black currant-balsamic sauce. The prix fixe includes an appetizer, salad, entrée with vegetables and dessert.  Service is from 5 to 11 p.m. Haydon expects people will hang around to bring in the New Year with a toast at midnight.

Royal Thai will be open, doing their regular menu until 10 p.m.

Bargain of the Eve: Newcomer, Mikey's tucked away at 783 Andersen Drive (454-6453) is taking reservations for between 6 and 9:30 p.m. The three-course menu, for $25, sounds like a bargain with the regular menu that includes Cuban and Mexican special dishes, but owner Wissam "Sam" Qudsieh is adding the choice of three courses of Middle Eastern dishes including meze (appetizers), chicken or beef shish kabob and dessert. But get this: he will also have a belly dancer for eye appeal.

Sabor of Spain offers a five-course menu, which will include bacalao on crostini with tobiko caviar, roasted chestnut soup, a seafood salad, beef cheeks, roasted root vegetable gratin with a red wine sauce and a goat milk flan. It's priced at $50 and $80 with paired wines. Most enticing is that music from the live Gypsy jazz band, the New Moldy Six, will blow from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Not far away San Rafael Joe's will serve their Italian-kissed menu, while Dave Albini will play his accordion accompanied by a drummer. Service is from 5 to 11 p.m.

You can't get dinner at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, but there will be a full menu of entertainment headlined by comic Kevin Meaney. The show is from 8:30 to 11:15 p.m.

For JCC members it's $45; general is $55 with reserved VIP seating running $65 for members and $75 others.

So, you shouldn't starve, the center is offering a full no-host bar, desserts and savory tastes, party favors and the traditional countdown.  11:59:59… Happy New Year!
