Organic Juice Shops Open in San Rafael While Longtime Office Supply Chain Prepares to Shutter

Two new options for healthy and organic eating have opened their doors in downtown San Rafael, as well as a new Filipino and Mexican food taqueria.

Fresh Openings

Urban Remedy, an organic juice bar, celebrated its grand opening on Monday, April 8, at 1904 Fourth Street. They offer an all-organic range of juices, shakes and snacks that are created with body cleansing in mind. Customers can purchase a range of cleanse options, such as a "Signature Cleanse" or a "Super Green Cleanse" right in the store. Urban Remedy's shakes are a meal in itself — each one packs a power protein punch — and come in flavors ranging from banana chocolate to peanut butter and jelly. Snacks offered include a 100 percent raw and gluten-free chocolate brownie or cheesy kale chips. The shop, at the west end of Fourth Street, is 400-square-feet and will also be selling seasonal kitchen specials such as salad dressings and raw foods that can compliment a cleanse. New Organix Cafe Offers GMO-Free Options

Located inside Renaissance Center Marin at 115 Third Street, Organix Cafe and Juice Bar had a soft opening on April 15, although it will celebrate its grand opening on May 15. The cafe will serve organic hot and cold breakfasts and lunches as well as juices and fruit smoothies. The space’s size allows for 40 guests to enjoy the food from co-owners Nicole Naee (also the chef) and Jordon Atkinson. Naee, originally from Hawaii, said rice bowls are one of the most popular menu items. “Most of the ingredients in the rice bowls I try to keep raw, in order to keep the nutritional value in the vegetables,” The menu is GMO free and Naee strives to source produce and product from local farmers. The café is a new business venture from Naee, who is a participant in the center’s Food Business Incubator Program. The cafe’s wall decor will cast a rotating spotlight on local artists, in an ongoing effort to support local businesses and community members.

Patrick & Co Packs Up

The longtime office supply chain Patrick & Co, located at 1515 Third Street, will be closing at the end of April. Having been open for more than 30 years, manager Chris Jungeberg cited the lack of foot traffic with recent low sales as the reason for the closure. Patrick & Co will retain several of its San Francisco stores, while an outlet in Oakland was shuttered in 2010 and the Palo Alto shop will be closing in 2013 as well. Folks looking for a good deal on offices supply furniture, pens, paper, and other materials can stop by the shop as everything, down to the light fixtures, can be had at a bargain.

Mix it Up at Pa’s

A new type of taqueria has opened at 909 B Street. Pa’s Filipino and Mexican food has replaced the empty storefront formerly known as Tekilas Taqueria, which closed in 2011. Offering a tasty menu with items such as Pescado Frito, whole deep fried fish, or Beef Caldereta (a Filipino beef stew), the owners are hoping to draw community members to their quieter end of B Street.

UPS Adds a New Location

UPS will soon be opening a new location in San Rafael, to the delight of northern San Rafael residents in need of packaging and shipping. The new spot is located at 1005 Northgate Drive in Terra Linda, a retail space formerly known as New York by the Bay Deli. The opening is slated for early May.
