Muffin Mania is a Gerstle Park staple offering sustenance for the people. This small family business provides love for all community members, including families and dogs. With free Wi-Fi, doggie water bowls and children’s books, it’s easy to see this San Rafael institution enjoys their customers. Oh yes, they have killer muffins too, with recipes ranging from the super popular pumpkin to the delectable blueberry cream cheese.

Who are they?

Owner Ilona Sullivan is proud that she’s been in business since 1983. She’s continuing a legacy by keeping Muffin Mania open and thriving, as she opened the shop with her husband, who has since passed away. The Sullivan’s son is an integral piece of the plan to keep Muffin Mania in the family, as he studied the art of pastry-making and has since returned home to keep those muffins coming out as warm and delicious as ever. Sullivan is a long-time member of the San Rafael community and owning Muffin Mania allows her to see the local kids grow up and bring in children of their own to taste and enjoy one of the over 25 different types of muffins offered daily.

How long have they been there?

Sullivan is very proud to say that Muffin Mania is celebrating 29 years of bringing fabulous baked goods to the neighborhood of Gerstle Park and all San Rafael residents.

Why are they in our business spotlight?

Among the 25 different options offered, Muffin Mania even serves vegan choices, with every batch made from scratch. As Sullivan says, “If you are going to eat it, eat it right!” Even the hand-rolled croissants are made with real butter and those of French origin have been known to tout it’s incredible flakiness and buttery flavor as being as good or better than some of those famous rolls made in France. This is the anti-Starbucks with Rock n’ Roll flare, where one can get a muffin worth the mania and a real smile from behind the counter too.
