Seven Things to Know about the Return of Italian Street Painting

After a two-year hiatus, the downtown San Rafael event will return to Marin this weekend. Here's what you need to know.

1. It’s This Weekend

The event, now called Italian Street Painting Marin, is returning to San Rafael after a two-year absence. It’s set for June 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown San Rafael.

2. Drawing on the Street in Chalk is an Italian Tradition

Madonnari, or chalk street painting, dates back to 16th century Italy. Modern Madonnari artists from around the Bay Area will be drawing at Italian Street Painting Marin.

3. Kids Can Draw on the Street, Too

Kids between ages 2 and 12 can create a mini Madonnari. For $10, a child will be provided with a box of chalk and a 2’ X 2’ street square on Children’s Avenue, where they can design their own street art.

4. There’s More than Street Painting

Italian Street Painting Marin will include live music, wine and food. Click here to see the entertainment schedule.

5. Festival Location and Road Closures

The festival takes places on Fifth Avenue between B Street and Court Street as well as A Street between Fourth Street and Fifth Street. The roads were closed on Wednesday and they will reopen on Monday, July 1, at 4 p.m.

6. It’s No Longer a Free Event

Attendants are required to buy $5 tickets to attend the festival, however children age 12 and under are free. Attendees will receive a wristband that’s good for an one-day entry, which includes in and out privileges. Tickets are only available on-site.  Tickets may be purchased at the main gate at Fourth and A Streets, or the entrances at Fifth Avenue and B Street or Fifth Avenue and Court Street.

7. Where to Park

The best options for parking are at one of the two downtown parking garages located at Third and A Streets or Third and C Streets. Click here to see a downtown San Rafael parking lot guide.

Only service animals are allowed at the event. For more information, visit italianstreetpaintingmarin.org or call (415) 884-2423.
