Impressively filmed on Japanese locations, director Banmei Takahashi's Zen is a poignant, reverent and moving drama about Dogen, the 13th century Japanese Buddhist master who studied in China and established a monastic practice that emphasizes sitting meditation. He is regarded as the founder of the Soto school of Zen.
