SambaDá

After nearly a decade of mixing musical backgrounds and influences, SambaDá is coming to the Osher Marin JCC; Saturday January 29, 2011 @ 8pm to liven up the crowd with non-stop percussion driven dance music that inspires dancing feet and samba-reggae-funk.

You may not have your feet in the sand, but there will be a gathering of surfers-cum-dancers rocking out to hybrid musical sounds brought to you by a nine-piece infusion of eclectic and diverse mixture of culture and rhythms. The craftspeople and artists of SambaDá, with one foot firmly rooted in California, and another in the deep cultural traditions of Brazil, are known for serving up non-stop percussion driven dance music. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America.

The much-anticipated SambaDá will perform Saturday, January 29, 2011 @ 8pm in Hoytt Theater. The evening will begin with an incredible treat!  A pre-concert dance lesson, taught by master dancer Dandha Da Hora, who is not only lead vocalist for SambaDá but a lead dancer with Ile Aiye, one of Brazil's most important musical and cultural institutions. All included in the price of admission!  Doors open at 7:15pm with no host cocktails, beers, wines and concession of sweets & savories available for purchase throughout the night. Don't wait, buy your tickets now: $22/$26. Tickets are available online at www.marinjcc.org or by calling 415.444.8088.

The ethnic flavors of SambaDá are a Brazilian base with a hint of styles and rhythms from surrounding regions. Their extensive repertoire is carried over to all corners of the world – adding variety to their high-energy electric, up-beat, vibrant performances. What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more! Their performances are intense, both intimate and exuberant; a mix of samba, capoeira music, funk, reggae and hip-hop. SambaDá has been representing the town of Santa Cruz; where the band was founded in 1997 by Brazil native Papiba Godinho. They are world-renowned and have performed at festivals and venues up and down the West coast, including San Francisco Carnival, Harmony Festival, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Whole Earth Festival, and the Salem World Beat Festival. Papiba Godhino, lead vocals, Guitar, Cavaco and Percusion, composes much of SambaDá's original music, inspiring the rest of the band: Brazilian vocalist, percussionist and dancer Dandha da Hora, the multi-instrumental Anne Stafford (including: Saxaphone, Flute, Clarinet, Percussion and Vocals), drummer Gary Kehoe, bassist Kevin "Pescador" Dorn, with Marcel Menard, Marcio Peeter, Wagner Santos Profeta and Will Kahn beating up percussion.

The Hoytt Theater is a unique and entertaining venue. Having the experience of a night-club with a full bar, intimate table seating, soft lighting and plenty of space on the wooden floor, the Hoytt Theater makes for the perfect evening of high-energy performance and danceable grooves. The Osher Marin JCC's parking is always FREE. From Highway 101 in San Rafael, take the North San Pedro exit and head east, past the Marin Civic Center.  The Osher Marin JCC, at 200 N. San Pedro Road, is on the right-hand side, approximately half a mile from the freeway exit. The parking lot is located directly in front of the building with handicap parking spaces available.  In the event of multiple programs, or heavily attended events (as we expect this to be), overflow vehicles may be directed to available on-street parking or on adjacent properties.
