Peter Pan (1924) Live Music for Silent Film

The ace musicians of Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra return to the Rafael to accompany the rare silent fantasy-adventure Peter Pan, screened in a restored 35mm print. Originally released in 1924, Peter Pan was the first film adaptation of J.M. Barrie's play, and it is said Sir James himself chose then-unknown Betty Bronson to play the role of the boy who never grew up. Directed by Herbert Brenon and adhering closely to the plot and stagecraft of the original play, this thoroughly charming version also features Mary Brian as Wendy, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Virginia Browne Faire as Tinker Bell and Anna May Wong, the groundbreaking Chinese-American actress, as the Indian princess Tiger Lily. Long out of circulation, the film was restored only in recent years. 102 min. Based in Louisville, Colorado, The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra enriches the silent film experience with authentic music of the era. Members include: Brian Collins, clarinet; Dawn Kramer, trumpet; David Short, cello; Britt Swenson, violin; under the direction of pianist Rodney Sauer, who compiles and arranges the scores. On Saturday, February 12, Mont Alto will perform for the epic French silent L'Argent at the Castro Theatre, as part of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival's Winter Event.
