Live Music with World Beat Band SambaDá

The Kanbar Center for Performing Arts at the Osher Marin JCC presents SambaDá, the hugely popular nine-member samba-reggae-hip hop-funk band from Santa Cruz that enlivens crowds with its non-stop percussion-driven hybrid music. The artists of SambaDá create danceable grooves firmly rooted in California coast culture and traditions of Central and South America, musically uniting people across borders with their original and eclectic mix of samba, reggae, hip-hop and funk. Pre-concert there will be a dance lesson, taught by master dancer Dandha Da Hora, who is lead vocalist for SambaDá and a lead dancer with Ile Aiye, one of Brazil's most important musical and cultural institutions.

WHEN: Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 8 p.m. (Doors open at 7:15 p.m. for pre-concert dance lesson with Dandha Da Hora of Brazil's acclaimed Ile Aiye.)

WHERE: Hoytt Theater, The Osher Marin JCC, 200 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael, 94903. There will be a concession of sweets and savories and no-host bar with cocktails, beer and wine for purchase.

About SambaDá

Founded in 1997 by Brazilian native Papiba Godinho, SambaDá has a reputation for seriously danceable grooves with performances that are both intimate and exuberant. SambaDá, representing their hometown Santa Cruz, combines inspiration from samba, capoeira music, funk, reggae and hip-hop and has been featured at San Francisco Carnival, Harmony Festival, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Whole Earth Festival, and the Salem World Beat Festival. Papiba Godhino is the lead vocalist who composes most of the music and also plays guitar, cavaco and percussion. The rest of the band includes Brazilian vocalist, percussionist and dancer Dandha da Hora, the multi-instrumental Anne Stafford (saxophone, flute, clarinet, percussion and vocals), drummer Gary Kehoe, bassist Kevin "Pescador" Dorn, and Marcel Menard, Marcio Peeter, Wagner Santos Profeta and Will Kahn blending beats on percussion.
