Art Works Downtown announces “Dia De Los Muertos: Day of the Dead”

Art Works Downtown announces  “Dia De Los Muertos: Day of the Dead” an exhibit of Altars rooted in Mexican Tradition, Sept 30 through Nov 11, Opening Reception on Friday, Oct 14 coinciding with 2nd Fridays Art Walk.  A 2nd Closing Party will coincide with Nov 11, 2nd Fridays Art Walk.  This exhibit has been curated by Sharon Christovich of the FolkArt Gallery (FolkArtGallery.com) and Carol Durham of Art Works Downtown.  The exhibit features fifteen unique displays of art, craft and interactivity honoring ancestors or those who have passed on.


One artist, Patrick Gavin Duffy of Marinwood, has created a memorial to Don Timoteo Murphy, the Irishman who was given the Rancho de las Gallinas San Pedro, “all of the land from San Rafael to the Novato border”. Tia Warner, Johanna Herrera and 180 students from San Rafael High have been collaborating on a variety of art, including Paper Maché shrine objects, Calaca, Papel Picado and ceramic skull lanterns, all hand-made by the students in their classes at the school.  One artist, Savita Skye of Oakland, has created a piece dedicated to all those murdered in Oakland, California in 2011.  Dave Benoit of San Anselmo has created an interactive piece that will allow the gallery viewer to use stamps and ink pads to “create a letter to the dead”, something which you may take home with you. 


Other artists exhibiting include: Gertrude Parker of Tiburon, Founder of MOCFA San Francisco(Museum of Crafts and Folk Art), Barbara Shapiro, textile artist, educator, writer and Board Member for the Textile Society of America and Textile Arts Council of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Carole Austin, former curator SF MOCFA, Marlene Robbins of San Jose, Stuart Wagner of San Anselmo, Robin Bentel of Novato.  San Rafael artists include: Hannah Merriman with a tribute to Japan, Isabel Hayes, James Marc, Petrina W., and Paul Pribuss.

Also featured at Art Works Downtown this evening is a Reception for artist Jenny Snodgrass in the Underground Gallery, and “Marin Handmade”, a North Bay Etsy Event and Sale in Susan Kirby Place, our outdoor garden patio.
