Water District Replacing Aging, Leak-Prone Pipes in Terra Linda

The following is a news release from the Marin Municipal Water District:

The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) will be installing 2,370 feet of new 6-, 8-, and 12-inch welded steel pipe in the Terra Linda Area of San Rafael.

The project also involves the abandonment of 5,600 feet of leak-prone cast iron pipe dating to the 1930s. The old pipe was installed prior to the subdivision of Terra Linda to supply Hamilton Air Force Base. Since then, many houses and other buildings have been constructed within close proximity of the pipes, putting the buildings at risk of damage should one of the old pipes break. The distribution piping grid has been expanded as the subdivision has grown to such an extent that much of this old pipe’s capacity is no longer needed.

New pipe will be installed in Oleander Drive and Los Gamos Road. Piping will be abandoned in easements between houses and parks along Oleander Drive, Orange Blossom Lane, Las Gallinas Avenue, Hickory Lane, Las Pavadas Avenue, Tamarack Drive, and Thornwood Terrace. The project also will eliminate piping that runs between the sound wall and the traffic lanes of 101 South near Los Gamos Road.

MMWD received four bids for the project. The Board of Directors awarded the contract to Richmond-based W.R. Forde Associates, which submitted the lowest responsible bid of $396,780.

This contact was awarded on May 20, 2014, and work is expected to be completed by the middle of September. Both the contractor and MMWD will make every effort to minimize traffic disruptions during construction. Water service may be interrupted for short periods during construction; the district will notify those affected 24 to 48 hours in advance of any needed shutdowns.

Customers with questions about the project can contact MMWD Senior Engineer Steve Suskind at 415-945-1517.
