Target Construction: Noisy Pile Driving a Thing of the Past

It’s just a matter of months before Marin will have its second Target store, and San Rafael residents can expect a reprieve in noisy construction from now until the Shoreline Parkway shopping center is expected to open in October.

Those involved with the construction of the store in east San Rafael recently thought the noisy pile driving — that had been going on for months — was going to take longer than the estimated completion date at the end of March.

But March 29 news of a delay was quickly reversed on April 1 — when organizers announced that on the Target San Rafael website and Facebook page that  “push-to-the-finish” had building contract Whiting-Turner completing the pile driving on April 1.

“Not an April Fool’s joke, but the real deal,” organizers wrote on the San Rafael says Yes to Target Facebook page.

The news might have created a sight of relief to many — the pile driving, which began earlier this year — was the noisiest construction phase for the big-box retailer.

Target Spokesperson Anne Christensen said the construction progress is still on track. “We are excited to open it October 2013,” she said.

The 137,000-square foot store will include 500 parking spaces and a staff of roughly 200.

The Marin Independent Journal originally reported in February that the pile driving was expected to be completed at the end of February.

The piles were driven into the bay mud and old landfill the project sites on.

The next phase of construction will entail creating the building framing, according to the IJ.

Officials with Shoreline Parkway, Whiting-Turner and Target did not return calls seeking more information about the status of the construction.
