Café du Cirque Closes

Year-old cafe shuts its doors after just one year in business.

A kid-oriented café with a European flair, Cirque de Café barely had a chance to generate a following before the announcement that it was shutting its doors.

The downtown San Rafael café opened in February of 2012, offering sandwiches, salads and other light fare made from local organic ingredients. The café also featured a play area for kids. Just a year after opening, the café’s Facebook page has an announcement that its doors are closed.

“It's with a mixed feeling that we are closing our doors and selling the café,” the Facebook statement reads. “It's sad but also exciting to embrace new beginnings and adventures. We are sure we will see you all again very soon.”

An outgoing message on the café’s answering machine says that the place is closing temporarily. The owners didn’t respond to requests from Patch to specify the details.

According to MarinMommies.com, Cafe du Cirque was opened by Marin mom Kerstin Fleischer (she had a 3-year-old at the time) and her husband Tom Coleman.

“Thank you for a great year at Cafe du Cirque,” the Facebook announcement states. “We had a lot of fun, playing with the kids and having you over for lunch and breakfast, coffees and sweets. Thank you for your great friendships.”

A number of the café’s Facebook friends bade farewell and Fleisher responded with an additional personal note: “Well, to be honest, having a cafe is a lot of work, having a toddler is a lot of work — having both can kill you. There is no balance and way too much work for one person. I need either a partner or a lot of staff to help me. It's OK — I also like to see my husband again...”
