San Anselmo's Long-Running Karuna Flap Goes Before Supes

A Marin County Board of Supervisors hearing on the Karuna development is scheduled for Tuesday.

San Anselmo's 'Karuna' land dispute goes back well over 20 years. So why not kick the can one more time?

That appears to be the direction things are going as the as the Marin County Board of Supervisors readies for a Tuesday afternoon hearing on the status of the 11-acre parcel in unincorporated San Anselmo.

The hearing on the Karuna Land LLC Master Plan, Land Division and Precise Development Plan and Negative Declaration of Environmental Impact for the proposed development at 1 Sacramento Avenue is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The controversy over developing the parcel that sits just north of Sleepy Hollow goes back decades, before the current owners, Jerry and Mea Draper, bought the land in the early 1990's according to a 2009 Marin Independent Journal report.

The Drapers, who bought the land in 17 years ago after a previous condominium development plan fell through according to the IJ report, have been involved in legal fights with the county over a 2009 proposal that the county rejected.

And if the report that will be the basis of Tuesday's hearing is any indication, their current proposal to build a six-lot subdivision appears to be headed deeper into limboland.

The Community Development Agency's recommendation is a mixed bag from a development standpoint, giving the Master Plan a thumbs up but recommending a denial of the Precise Development Plan and Subdivision.
