MMWD Investing a Quarter Million Dollars to Replace Aging Pipes in San Anselmo, San Rafael

Both San Anselmo and San Rafael have street paving projects planned for the affected streets this summer, so MMWD scheduled the pipeline replacements to be completed first.

The following is a news release from the Marin Municipal Water District:

The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) will be installing more than one-third mile of pipeline in San Anselmo and San Rafael to replace aging, leak-prone pipes and to improve fire-fighting capacity.

On Sunview and Bridge Avenues in San Anselmo, a total of 1,230 feet of new 6- and 8-inch welded steel pipe will replace 4- and 8-inch cast iron pipe. The old cast iron pipelines date to 1947 and 1939 and are prone to leaks and breaks.

On Point San Pedro Road in San Rafael, 680 feet of new 6-inch welded steel pipe will replace 4-inch pipe dating to 1969. The San Rafael project is part of the district’s Fire Flow Improvement Program and is supported by the local fire department.

Work began on Tuesday, May 6, on Point San Pedro Road. The work on Bridge Avenue is scheduled to start in mid May and the work on Sunview Avenue in early June. All work is expected to be completed by mid-July 2014. Both the contractor and MMWD will make every effort to minimize traffic disruptions during construction.

Funding for the district’s Fire Flow Improvement Program is provided by a $75 annual parcel fee. From 1997 through June 30, 2012 the fee has supported the investment of more than $74 million in fire flow and seismic-related improvements and the replacement of more than 66 miles of pipe throughout the district’s service area.

Customers with questions about the projects can contact MMWD at (415) 945-1569.
