"THUNDER DOG" BOOK SIGNING

San Rafael, CA (October 5, 2011) -- Whistlestop, the non-profit organization that provides vital services to Marin County’s older adults and individuals with disabilities, is pleased to announce the reading and book signing of the New York Times Best Seller, Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson.

In the book, Thunder Dog, Michael takes you step-by-step through his own experience of the 9/11 attack firsthand, his trip down 1,463 stairs to freedom, only to have to run from the collapse of the South Tower, just 100 yards away from where he was standing, and how he was able to do this with the help of his hero and friend, his guide dog Roselle.

The reading and signing of Thunder Dog will be held on Monday, October 11th from 2:30 to 4:00pm at Whistlestop’s Jackson Café, 930 Tamalpais Ave, in San Rafael.  For more information, call 415-456-9062 or go to www.whistlestop.org.

Since 1954 Whistlestop has been helping the Marin County community end loneliness and isolation through comprehensive and integrated services and activities for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Whistlestop is best known for providing rides for people with disabilities.  Their fleet of over 50 specialized buses  run seven days a week from early morning to late night, offering approximately 150,000 rides yearly throughout Marin County and beyond.

In addition, Whistlestop’s Active Aging Center, located in downtown San Rafael, provides continuing support for older adults through client-centered services and activities. These include computer classes, social activities, exercise classes, and many special programs for the Hispanic/Latino, Vietnamese, German, and Farsi-speaking communities. Invaluable services like citizenship assistance and ESL classes are offered as part of Whistlestop’s ongoing mission. Today the bustling Multicultural Department provides over 10,000 outreach contacts yearly in multiple languages.

Whistlestop’s Jackson Café, located at the Active Aging Center, serves delicious and affordable lunchtime meals, Monday through Friday to diners of all ages. The Café features daily specials, deli sandwiches, soups, desserts, and fresh salads. The Jackson Café offers a comfortable setting where older adults and their family and friends can eat well and stay socially active.
