Larkspur Library Event: "The Sting at 40: a Sure Bet that Paid 29 to One."Monday, September 30David Reffkin presents "The Sting at 40: a Sure Bet that Paid 29 to One." The Sting accomplished what no other picture did: It revitalized an entire genre of music - ragtime. This is the definitive account of how an original American creation became a pop music phenomenon. From an insider’s perspective, and with musical examples, we’ll track the overnight popularity of Scott Joplin's ragtime, its influence on our culture, and its rebirth as a compositional form. We’ll follow the 40-year migration of “The Entertainer” from main title theme to ring-tone. David Reffkin is the director of The American Ragtime Ensemble, 30-year producer of “The Ragtime Machine” radio program, winner of The Scott Joplin Award for ragtime performance and research, and the San Francisco Mayor’s Certificate of Honor.
