San Rafael Airport Plans to Go Solar

The Marin Energy Authority has signed a 20-year agreement with the San Rafael Airport for 972 kilowatts of rooftop solar power.

The Marin Energy Authority has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the San Rafael Airport for 972 kilowatts of rooftop solar power, the largest solar project in Marin County. “We believe in renewable energy and in the importance of renewable practices in every aspect of our lives and businesses,” said Bob Herbst of the San Rafael Airport. “This solar project will be a needed example and the first step to promoting and providing locally generated and consumed renewable energy." The power is purchased for Marin Clean Energy customers through MEA’s feed-in tariff program, which is designed to provide local residents and property owners who build small‐scale renewable generation systems, like solar or wind, with an opportunity to …

Readers' Choice: Where's the Best Ice Cream Shop?

Voting is open until Friday. Tell us where you love to grab a cone.

As the weather starts heating up, many of us will need some refreshing frozen yogurt or ice cream to cool us down. So where's the best place? Have fun showing some love for your favorite ice cream spot, not only with a poll vote (one per reader, please) but by leaving a great review and a positive rating on its Patch Directory page. Just click the highlighted names to see the directory page for each place in the contest. And if we've left one business out, tell us and we'll be sure to add.  The poll goes away after a few days, but the positive reviews and ratings stay forever — plus they count heavily in the contest judging. So if you love one (or more) of our contestants, be sure to leave a rating and a review.  And if you own or manage …

What Do You Wish Was Here?

Tell us what would you like to see in this vacant business.

Our city's commerical vacany rate is currently between 8 percent and 10 percent. San Rafael Patch is featuring each week a vacant or abandoned building or lot and asking readers: "What do you wish was here?" The idea was inspired by Candy Chang from New Orleans, who in 2010 created "I wish this was" stickers and placed thousands around the city for residents to fill in the blanks. Stickers can be bought online here.  This corner of Fifth Avenue and Court Street used to be the home of a specialty store where you could find the most interesting treasures from around the world, until it closed it's doors last year. What do you wish took its place? About this column: There are plenty of empty and abandoned buildings in San Anselmo and Fairfax…

Local Merchants Should Join 'Alcopop Free Zone,' Supes Say

Local merchants like United Markets and Andy's Local Market support Supervisors' campaign against the sell of alcopop drinks in Marin.

Several local beverage retailers, including United Markets, have lent their support for Marin’s alcopop-free campaign. “This is a particularly important idea to engage our retailer community in support of our youth around the most serious and prevalent drug use in our county,” Supervisor Steve Kinsey said at the Tuesday Board of Supervisors meeting. The campaign urges retailers to voluntarily refuse to stock, sell or market alcopops–defined as sugary, malt alcoholic beverages–in their stores in order to protect youth from consumption. Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution outlining the campaign in their Tuesday meeting. Alcopop sales make up a small percentage of overall alcoholic sales, but underage drinking involve such drinks, …

Contest voting (rules attached at right) comes in two forms: You can vote in the poll below, but the poll is not scientific and is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. Have fun by voting one time only in the poll, then show some love for your favorite spot by giving it a great review and a positive rating on its Patch Directory page. Why do the ratings matter more? The poll…

Smart Meter Opt-Out Deadline is Tuesday

Controversial program continues to generate angst among homeowners.

PG&E wants to hear from you. If you don't want the SmartMeter they installed on the side of your house - and they've installed a lot of them - the company wants to hear from you before tomorrow. According to information on their website, May 1 is the company's deadline to opt out of the program. The metering systems are being installed as part of a nationwide "smart grid" in 25 states around the country, according to California Public Utilities Commission President Michael Peevey. The SmartMeters have generated currents of controversy ever since PG&E began installing them without notifying residents. Opponents of the meters argue that the meters emit harmful electromagnetic signals and radiation, and that FCC standards don't go far enough…
