Smith Rafael Recieves Grant to Bring Science to the Screen
The independent nonprofit theater on Fourth Street was one of eight theaters in the country to receive the grant.
The was one of eight independent nonprofit theaters in the United States that received money to bring science to the screen.
The grant, awarded by the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Mass. and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, will go toward programs that pair screenings of movies and documentaries with presentations by science and technology experts. The Smith Rafael will receive $7,000 for the program.
“Many other cinemas may soon follow this pioneering effort to show that science and technology go hand in hand with entertainment," said Doron Weber, vice president of programs at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Previous topics in the program at the Coolidge Corner Theater include how our brains form memories of intense emotional experiences (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) to the latest advances in stem cell research (Woody Allen’s Sleeper) to animal mobbing behavior (Hitchcock’s The Birds).
