Gang Member Fights Cops to Avoid Arrest

It took three officers to subdue a man who resisted arrest for public intoxication.

A fight broke out between a known gang member and police after officers attempted to arrest the man for public intoxication in the Canal neighborhood Wednesday.

San Rafael resident Christian Baker, 19, was booked in on felony charges of battery on a peace officer, violating probation, resisting and obstructing an officer and for being intoxicated in public. His bail is set at $100,000.

San Rafael police officers found Baker intoxicated near Fairfax Street and when they attempted to arrest him, he began kicking, spitting and grabbing at the them. Three officers were needed to subdue him, according to Lt. Raffaello Pata.

Baker was on probation for a 2011 stabbing involving a rival gang and was out of jail pending sentencing when this altercation occurred.

“During the fight another member of Baker’s gang attempted to intercede but was stopped by the officers,” Pata said.

Street Crimes Unit Detective George Schikore received minor injuries as a result of Baker fighting with him and resisting arrest, he said.

Another juvenile suspect was with Baker was also intoxicated. Police arrested the minor without incident.  The juvenile was later cited and released to a parent.
